The Best Zoom Tool for DaVinci Resolve

By Jake Wipp

If you are anything like me you probably get annoying by recreating the same basic animations over and over again in every project… I was wasting hours doing this in all of my video projects and tutorials, so I built a tool to fix it!

WippZoom is a highly flexible and extremely fast zoom tool built by an editor, for editors making it the best zoom tool available. Let me explain why!

Why is WippZoom the best zoom tool for DaVinci Resolve?

Most of the time, when you need to zoom into your footage in DaVinci Resolve, you end up manually animating scale, using Dynamic Zoom, or grabbing a zoom tool that just isn’t very flexible. All of those approaches slow you down and rarely give you the control you actually want.

WippZoom is designed to solve those problems and fit directly into a real editing workflow—where speed, consistency, and quality matter. Instead of setting keyframes, nudging them around, and tweaking spline handles to get smooth motion, WippZoom handles all of that for you, so you can focus on the edit instead of the animation.

Powered by the AnimEngine, keyframes are basically a thing of the past. You can toggle animations on or off, control how long they take, and decide exactly when they start, while the AnimEngine takes care of the timing and easing behind the scenes.

And if that still isn’t enough, WippZoom includes real-time motion blur to help your zooms feel even smoother—without tanking playback performance.

WippZoom works as a Generator or an Effect right from the edit page. The Effect can be applied at the clip lever where the Generator version works as an adjustment clip. Unlike similiar tools which require you to add an adjustment clip and then add the effect to the adjustment clip, WippZoom does this for you!

Flexible Control Modes for Different Editing Scenarios

Not every zoom needs to behave the same way, which is why WippZoom includes multiple control modes. Each mode is designed for a specific type of zoom, so you’re not forcing one animation style to fit every situation.

Locked Mode

Locked mode is perfect for when you want to do basic punch-ins and add slight, consistent zooms to your videos. It removes the main zoom animation entirely and instead focuses on the Continued Zoom control. Continued Zoom sets a fixed zoom speed that progresses over time, rather than being tied to the length of the clip.

Because of this the zoom speed will always stay consistent no matter how long or short the clip is. This makes the Locked mode perfect for:

  • Long talking-head shots
  • Montages where you want a smooth push in/out
  • Slideshows
  • Screen Recordings/Screenshots

Standard Mode – Default option

Standard mode is the default and most flexible option, you’ll likely use it the most! It zooms in at the start of the clip and back out at the end, giving you full control of both sides of the animation.

In this mode you can:

  • Customize the Start Size and Start Pivot
  • Customize the End Size and End Pivot
  • Link the Pivots together for consistent framing
  • Add continued zoom on top of the main animation
  • Make Multi-Point Animations

All animation timing and easing is handled by AnimEngine V4, which means you get smooth, predictable motion without using keyframes! Plus, using the AnimEngine you can easily adjust the smoothness with the built in easing curves.

And, the standard mode has multi-point animations!

One of the biggest limitations with most zoom tools is that they only have one destination. As soon as you want to move to a new point on screen you’re forced to zoom back out and start over, or rebuild the animation entirely.

WippZoom’s multi-point animation system removes that limitation.

  1. Add the generator version of WippZoom and set it to zoom into a specific area on screen.
  2. When you’re ready to move to a different point without zooming back out, split WippZoom.
  3. In the second instance of WippZoom, adjust the end size and pivot to the new location on screen.
  4. Press the Match button in the second WippZoom instance.

Pressing Match links the two WippZoom instances together, allowing the animation to seamlessly transition from one point to the next without zooming out in between. The result is a smooth, continuous camera move that feels intentional and polished.

Unlike most zoom tools, you’re not locked into your first decision. If you go back and change framing, timing, or positioning, you can simply press the Match button again to refresh the connection. You’re never stuck with what you set the first time.

This makes multi-point zooms fast, flexible, and fully editable—exactly how animations should behave in a real editing workflow.

Duration Mode

Duration mode uses the same size and pivot controls from the Standard mode, but instead of having in and out animations it zooms over the entire duration of the clip.

This mode doesn’t use the full AnimEngine feature set but retains its easing customization and smooth animation from beginning to end.

Duration is perfect when you want a long, smooth zoom that has set start and end points.

So who is WippZoom for?

Basically anyone using DaVinci Resolve. I get asked all of the time which plugins are a must-have, WippZoom is at the top of that list!

Its speed, flexibilty, and customization allow it to fit into all sorts of workflows and make life easier for editors.

It’s especially useful for:

  • YouTube Creators and Educators
  • Tutorials and Screen-Recording Workflows
  • Talking Head and Commentary Videos
  • Anyone tired of rebuilding the same zoom animations over and over!

WippZoom Performance

WippZoom is a highly optimized zoom tool so not only is it extremely fast to setup but it also renders fast! On top of that, WippZoom has realtime motion blur which is huge in comparison to how slow motion blur typically is in DaVinci Resolve!

WippZoom vs Native DaVinci Resolve Tools

While DaVinci Resolve has the entire toolset you need to create smooth, professional zoom animations this requires a lot of work and setup:

  • Manual Keyframing
  • Rebuilding Animations for each clip
  • Manual Easing
  • Extra cleanup when you make timing adjustments

WippZoom fixes all of those issues with a simple, reusable system and produces smooth results everytime! It’s extremely user friendly making it easy for beginners and pros to get what they want in just a few seconds.

And, WippZoom has realtime motion blur! You can’t get that with any of the inspector controls!

WippZoom vs Other Zoom Tools

Many other creators have tried to build zoom tools, and some of them are really great!

Typically they fall short in one or several of these ways:

  • Only fit one style, don’t allow for much customization
  • Animating Timings are locked off
  • No Multi-Point Animations, or the multi-point animations cannot be customized after the fact
  • Convoluted UI in the Inspector
  • Slow to render
  • No Motion Blur

In each of those categories WippZoom excels, which makes it the best zoom tool for DaVinci Resolve!

Final Verdict: The Best Zoom Tool for DaVinci Resolve?

WippZoom exists because zooms are used constantly in real editing workflows, and the native tools in DaVinci Resolve don’t quite cut it.

With multiple control modes, multi-point animations, AnimEngine V4, and realtime motion blur WippZoom replaces the manual zoom workflows with a single tool!

If you rely on zooms in DaVinci Resolve, WippZoom is the best way to create them! Not to mention WippZoom is trusted by thousands of other video editors on a daily basis!
